Ah, the playground. The one place in the whole wide world where your sole responsibility is to have as much fun as humanly possible (okay, the one place besides Vegas). A place where kids become astronauts soaring to the moon on rocket swings, dig through sandboxes in search of buried treasure (or mom’s iPhone – again) and scamper through tunnels with more twists and turns than an Amanda Bynes tweet. Fortunately, LA has zillions of groovy playgrounds to choose from, and we’ve put together a list of the creme de la creme so you spend less time wandering and more time gettin’ your play on.

LA Parks and Recs Offers FREE Sports Programs!

If you are like most parents trying to find an activity for your kids this summer while not breaking the bank, LA Parks and Recreation offers free Youth Sports Programs. Visit their site for more information http://www.laparks.org/lakids/youth.htm. LA Parks and Recs also offers other FREE summer activities for children such as karate, boxing, and ceramics. Take The Family to Neighboring Bike Paths:



~Arroyo Seco
North of downtown, runs alongside the 210 Pasadena Fwy, about 3 miles long.

~Chandler Bikeway Burbank
The two-mile bikeway within the former Chandler Boulevard railroad right-of-way, running from Mariposa Street to the City border at Clybourn Avenue

~El Dorado Park
El Dorado East Regional Park, 7550 E. Spring Street, about a four mile paved path.

~Griffith Park/Los Angeles River
Travels from Griffith Park to Elysian Park, looking back along Crystal Springs Road in Griffith Park

~Santa Monica and Venice
From the Marina north to Sunset, eight-mile path runs north from Washington Blvd to Temescal Canyon Road.

~Sepulveda Basin
In Encino, start on Balboa Blvd at the Sepulveda Dam Recreation Area or the dirt lot near the archery range on Balboa between Victory and Burbank Blvd. The five mile path goes past fields of corn

~Shoreline Pedestrian Bike Path

~South Bay Bike Trail
From Palos Verdes North to the Marina

~The Strand
This 22-mile bike path that stretches along the Pacific Ocean from Will Rogers State Beach to Torrance County Beach.



Spring is in the air and right around the corner on March 20th. To kick off the season, there are several outdoor events around town which should definitely get you and your little one moving - and exploring!

        * Stroll Through the Seasons at King Gillette Ranch

           On this gentle 30-minute stroll, you can explore the native plant garden.

       * Native Ways at Sooky Goldman Nature Center, Franklin Canyon Park

          On this easy stroll, you can get first hand experience on how local natives once creative items      
          like tools, musical instruments and baskets from the world around them.

       * Weekend Tidepool Walks, Cabrillo Marine Aquarium

           Time: 12noon - 1:30pm
           Take a naturalist-led stroll around the Point Fermin State Marine Park. Outdoor clothing and  
           sneakers suggested. Young children must be accompanied by adults. Free; donations welcome.
